Mission trips, off-site retreats, and traveling ministry teams are some of the most meaningful work a congregation does — and also some of the highest-risk activity from an insurance standpoint, simply because people are outside the church’s familiar, controlled environment. It’s worth understanding what actually travels with your people and what doesn’t before the team leaves town.
General liability coverage for the church itself typically does extend to activities conducted away from the home property, since it covers the organization’s operations broadly rather than just a physical location. But that’s a different question from whether an individual participant’s medical expenses are covered if they’re injured on the trip, or what happens if the trip involves international travel, where domestic health insurance often provides limited or no coverage at all.
This is where short-term travel medical and accident insurance becomes worth the modest cost, particularly for international mission trips. These policies are typically inexpensive per participant and can cover emergency medical treatment, evacuation, and sometimes trip interruption — costs that would otherwise fall on the individual, their family, or informally on the church if something goes wrong far from home.
It’s also worth confirming, before any trip, that transportation is properly covered — whether that’s church-owned vehicles, rented vans, or volunteers using personal cars — and that trip leaders have basic emergency contact and medical information for every participant. None of this needs to slow down trip planning significantly, but it’s much easier to sort out three weeks before departure than during an actual emergency overseas.
Action Items
- Confirm transportation coverage (church-owned, rented, or personal vehicles) before every trip.
- Collect emergency contact and medical information for every participant ahead of departure.
